Lessons Learned From Literature

  • Both audiobooks and reading aloud are considered to be beneficial in helping students read or read better.
  • The main benefits of reading aloud and audiobooks are said to be increased fluency, faster vocabulary acquisition, motivation, better reading comprehension, content knowledge and reading readiness.
  • Articles about audiobooks sometimes quote research about reading aloud.
  • Articles about the benefits of reading aloud sometimes state that these benefits can be realized in a classroom setting by using audiobooks.
  • I have not been able to find any articles that actually compare the two methods.  There just seems to be this assumption that in a school setting the two will produce equivalent results.
